Every summer, the sunscreen aisle gets a little more confusing, doesn’t it? Mineral or chemical? SPF 30 or 50? Spray or lotion? And then there’s the age-old complaint from pretty much anyone trying to protect their skin: sunscreens can feel sticky or leave a white film on your skin. It’s tough to reach certain areas of the body. It can leave you wondering if applying sunscreen is more trouble than its worth (even though we know when it comes to preventing skin cancer, it’s a no brainer).

The good news? Science is listening. Summer 2026 is delivering some genuinely exciting developments in sun protection, and understanding what’s new could help you and your family be safer in the sun than ever before.

The Skin Stakes

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world. Let that sink for a minute. And one in five Americans will develop it in their lifetime. The five-year survival rate for melanoma detected early is about 99%. If skin cancer is caught late, that survival rate drops to 75%.

The single most effective thing you can do? Daily sunscreen use. Research published in February 2026 in the journal Cancers confirms that regular daily sunscreen use reduces actinic keratoses and squamous cell carcinoma — and that protection is most impactful for those at higher risk.

One of the most exciting 2026 developments is the recent FDA approval of bemotrizinol, which is a UV-filtering chemical already in wide use in Europe. It offers significantly broader UV coverage than most currently approved American options. For Americans who’ve long had access to fewer UV filter options than the rest of the world, this is genuinely big news.

Meanwhile, researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have developed a mineral sunscreen that addresses the chalky white film problem many sunscreen users complain about. The researchers haven’t changed the chemistry, but have changed the shape of zinc oxide particles. Traditional round zinc oxide particles clump together and scatter light, creating that visible white film. This new approach makes mineral sunscreen easier to use, with less mess. And a sunscreen that is comfortable to use on the skin is one that will likely get used more often, which is what matters most.

Put It Into Practice

The guidance from healthcare providers about sun and skincare is clear and consistent:

☀️ Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for daily use.

📈 Use SPF 50 or higher for extended outdoor time.

🧴 Apply about one teaspoon of sunscreen to each arm and each leg. Don’t forget to also apply to your chest, back, shoulders, scalp, and face, anywhere that will experience sun exposure. Apply 15-30 minutes before going outside.

⏰ Reapply every two hours or after swimming and sweating.

😊 For your face, if you’re using spray sunscreens, spray into your hands first, then apply. Don’t spray it directly on your face.

👕 Consider UPF-rated clothing for extended outdoor activities. Unlike standard fabrics, UPF clothing is specifically manufactured to block UV rays, with darker colors, tighter weaves, and synthetic materials offer the most protection.

🧑‍⚕️And see a dermatologist at least once a year. Know the ABCDEs of melanoma detection (Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, Evolution), and check your own skin regularly between visits.
