What is fasting?

Fasting is abstaining from anything for a spiritual purpose.

Does fasting always involve food?

No! Fasting can be abstaining from social media and digital platforms, television, from certain habits, from certain food categories, entertainment, whatever you choose.

What are the benefits of fasting?

In spiritual fasting, the purpose of fasting is to draw closer to God and to be reminded of our dependence on Him. As we abstain from things that can often distract us from prayer or from gratitude, we refresh our sense of connection to the Creator. Additionally, many faiths practice fasting as a way of pursuing spiritual breakthrough and to empower prayer life. 

How do I start?

Begin with determining what the purpose is to your fast. Are you giving up social media for three weeks? What do you hope to discover? Or let’s say that you are choosing to fast from breakfast every Wednesday. What will you do with that time to draw closer to God? Is there a breakthrough for your family you’re praying for? Knowing your purpose for fasting is the place to begin.

When do I start?

Several members of our Altrua HealthShare team are beginning our fast today. If that works well for you, great! If you need a little more time this week to get started, that’s fine too. The primary goal is to encourage you to start your year with a pause in one of your usual habits to help you be able to refocus spiritually.

Prayerfully consider how you would like to participate in this year’s fast. We look forward to you joining the community of Altrua HealthShare Members who are taking this journey together and are providing encouragement, accountability, and inspiration to one another.
